We proceeded to the ambulance bay, where I spent at least an hour going through a massive checklist of everything in the ambulance. Among the items I diligently checked off were epi-pens, gauze pads, blankets, AEDs, nasal cannulas, and traction splints. Colorful images of injuries requiring the use of these resources often danced in front of my mental eye as I plowed through my task; I tried my best to block them out but cannot claim any real semblance of success. After completing the checklist, I settled down into the designated third rider seat, making myself comfortable as the first rider on shift unplugged the ambulance from its battery-charging socket and attempted to ease the ambulance out of the bay. Too bad it didnt move. It whimpered feebly and then sputtered into silence. Ironic, that the three of us (well, the other two more than me) had considerable knowledge concerning broken bones and cardiac arrests but that none of us knew how to revive a dead ambulance. By this time, I was numb and greatly regretting my pre-shift plea for thrill. It was at this moment that I was given the opportunity to drive the ambulance. Driving, you must understand, is something I greatly miss in college. Im all for cardio and exercise and all that, but sometimes, Id love to drive to class instead of wrapping myself in five layers and walking out, whispering a brief prayer as I become a victim of chilly winds and interminably dry skin that no amount of lotion seems to fix. After signing off on a few papers, I became a drivers ed student once again and for the second time in my life, drove something larger than a Toyota Camry. It felt amazing to drive again, to know that even after six months of not touching a steering wheel, I remembered how to navigate a vehicle on a road. The two hours flew by, and the three of us returned to the ambulance bay, got out of the ambulance, and headed to the bunkroom, where MIT EMTs basically hang out and wait for calls. As my eyes were pretty tired, I sat down on the sofa and closed my eyes. Soon, I heard this: Is she asleep? Yeah, I think so. Lets draw on her! No, thats mean. But shes sleeping! (Me: laughing on the inside and wondering how long I can keep the charade up) Five Minutes Later Okay, fine, lets draw on her. *patter of shoes, a pen briefly touches my cheek* (I move slightly (no way am I getting drawn on) and they scatter) Ten Minutes Later *click!* (Me: Aw, crap. Also, a culturally enriching experience is when you allow yourself to become more educated on a certain topic and it improves yourself. I feel the theatre, through plays, gives people a culturally enriching experience. By sitting in the audience and becoming involved in the play we are able to place ourselves in the shoes of the characters on the stage. We relate our own lives to theirs. Through this and the fact that when we go to see a play we are broadening are horizons allows us to have a culturally enriching experience. The play, Look Homeward, Angel, relates to my meaning of a culturally enriching experience. In the play there is this family who goes through many problems, an alcoholic father, a crazy mother, and a dieing son. With these problems audience members are able to relate to the pain and suffering that this family is experiencing. It is not that you can relate exactly to their problems, but the audience member knows what it feels to have family struggles. As I sat there watching the play, I became very emotional because I was able to relate myself to the youngest son because I, too, am the youngest in my family and know what it feels like to always be the one joked on or have a mother who takes up all her strength to finally let you go and become an adult. This play also shows people how the times where during that period and how money was a major struggle. The play, for two hours, makes you feel apart of this family and awakens your mind with knew knowledge, allowing for an experience th at is culturally enriching. When it comes to recommending Look Homeward, Angel I definitely recommend it to men and women of all ages. It is a comedy/tragedy that grabs you from the moment the play starts. When I went to see the play I do not think that there was a dry eye in the audience. Even grown men who I thought never cried were crying their eyes out. Many francophone people looking for work in Quebec cities were refused because of their French background. In areas such as Montreal, the francophone people were earning up to 50 percent less than their English speaking peers. There was a clear distinction between the quality of life for the English and the quality of life for the French. It was because of this distinction that the people of Quebec often resented the English and their ways of life. And it is from this resentment, the story The Hockey Sweater was written. The Hockey Sweater is a story told from the perspective of a young boy living in a small town in Quebec. He, like all the kids his age loved hockey, especially the Montreal Canadiens. He is so deeply loyal to his French heritage that he hates the Toronto Maple Leafs and anything about them for the sole reason that they are not French. Roch Carrier’s The Hockey Sweater is an allegory underlining the tensions found between Francophone and Anglophone Canadians. These tensions stem from Quebec’s economic reliance on the English, Quebec’s desire to maintain their culture and traditions, and the frustration demonstrated by Quebecers with regards to the language of Canada. The book The Hockey Sweater as well as the French economy in the 50s and 60s demonstrated a certain economic reliance on the English. In The Hockey Sweater, when the main character Roch needs a new sweater, his mother decides to order it from the Eaton’s catalogue. Now with Mr. Eaton being English, he sends a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey instead, greatly upsetting Roch. Roch’s mother then refuses to send it back because she is afraid to offend Mr. Eaton. Quebec’s culture in the 1950’s and 60’s was very similar to this. When Quebec’s working class went out to find jobs, they found that many major Quebec companies were run by English speaking businessmen. By extension, this also meant that these businesses would favour those who could speak English. Even the French people who were able to find jobs found that what they earned was meagre compared to the English workers. Political activist Felix Leclerc described this phenomenon, writing, Our people are the water boys of their own country. Nevertheless, they were forced to deal with it because they simply had no other choice. Where were they going to work if not for the English speaking bureaucrats? Finding a job in other English speaking cities was even more difficult because being a distinct minority they were easy to manipulate to conform to the company’s needs. This led to frustration amongst the Quebecois, being unable to find a job in their own French speaking cities because they were French. The hockey sweater Roch was forced to accept is just like the jobs many Quebecers were forced to accept in that if they didn’t, they had no other place to go. Quebec, since its inception into Canada, has developed a culture greatly different from any other province. Over the years, a key part of this French way of life has been preserving their distinct culture and traditions. Quebec, with their completely different language and a more traditional religious denomination, has established themselves as a distinct society within the nation of Canada. The short story The Hockey Sweater has this theme of loyalty to the French traditions. The first page of The Hockey Sweater contains the line We lived in three places – the school, the church and the skating-rink – but our real life was on the skating-rink. The choice of the hockey rink as a center of life puts the setting of the story deep in Canadian culture. Throughout the story, the author, Roch Carrier, uses the Montreal Canadiens as a metaphor for the French and the Toronto Maple Leafs as a metaphor for the English. It is of the main character’s belief that the Montreal Canadiens, or in this case the French, are superior to his English speaking brethren. Stemming from this superiority complex comes the frustration of the French that they to live and work under the laws and policies that the English impose upon them. The Quebecois found that their cultures were too different to be placed on equal footing with the other provinces. This frustration with the other provinces eventually led to The Quiet Revolution and an attempt to separate from the rest of Canada. Up until the end of the 1960s, the French people of Quebec could be seen living as second-rate citizens in Canada. It wasn’t until 1969, that the Official Languages Act was passed by Pierre Elliot Trudeau giving both the English and French languages equal representation in Canadian parliament. Up until then, most documents written by the Canadian government and its affiliates were solely in English and did not recognize French as an official language. In The Hockey Sweater, the character of Mr. Eaton can be equated to the role of the Canadian government. The order forms provided in the Eaton’s catalogue were completely in English even though they were being shipped to a small French town in Quebec. This could be seen as the English speaking people of Canada imposing their language and culture upon Quebec in an almost assimilation-like manner. The lack of equality with regards to the French and English language pre- 1969 led to many people of Quebec feeling subservient to the rest of Canada. The language issue played a vital role in the story of The Hockey Sweater which led to great turmoil just as it did with Quebec’s culture during the 1950s and 60s. Quebec culture in the mid- 20th century was very different from any other province. Sporting a different language, find equality with the rest of Canada was often a struggle for the Quebecois. English run companies in Quebec had a tendency to take advantage of the French, using their language against them. Also, with having a unique society, it was always a challenge for the people of Quebec to follow â€Å"La survivance† and preserve their language and traditions. It is also of note that during the 50s and 60s, the French language had not been recognized as an official language of Canada with English residing as the language spoken by the majority of Canada. All of these things combined left a bitter taste in the mouths of the French. Roch Carrier’s The Hockey Sweater is a perfect metaphor for this, mirroring the struggles of an entire province in the tribulations of a young boy. The English or in this case the Toronto Maple Leafs had no place in Quebec and was shunned by the people of Quebec. Anti-intellectualism in the political sphere has founded itself on contempt for intellectuals, claiming that they are elites who are committed to ideological playfulness rather than practical application. However, it seems that toying with past and present ideas is necessary to engender the most effective political policies. Anti-intellectualism is a result of a failing education system, the integration of church into state, and the ease with which political pundits can drive the media. Currently, anti-intellectualism is spreading like a plague thro ugh the American political landscape. We as citizens can inoculate this disease through a complete overhaul of the US education system. An improvement to the educational system could occur with increased liberal arts integration into primary, secondary, and university education curriculums. It would seem that knowledge of many subjects would be most effective in impacting political ideas since politics incorporates so many facets of life. Having historical and philosophical knowledge of America is fundamental to making informed political choices that best reflect what was intended for this country- we would not want to collapse into what our founding fathers escaped from. Liberal arts education would create more informed and progressive voters and politicians because they would be acquainted with a broad scope of policies that have not worked in the past; this would allow us as an electorate body to spring into the future by creating new ideas and better political policies. This anti-intellectualism movement favors faith; as a result, evoluti on theories are considered controversial, and creation theories find a place for themselves in the US education system. Schools are supplementing textbooks with creation theories as an alternative to evolution. This contradicts the basic tenet of the separation of church and state and the secularism of America. Creation theories should not have a place in our nations public schools, and implementing such values in education steers young minds away from the basic principles of America. In addition, the anti-intellectualism movement has managed to bring Barack Obamas religious affiliation to the forefront of our political discourse. This should be a non-issue- America is a secular nation and therefore, politicians religious affiliations should be of no consequence to our political forums. However, principles are not enough to carry a nation in the political arena- policies are necessary, and implementing policies requires intellectual people. In essence, politics are constituted by policies and policies are constituted by ideas; as a result, ideas are fundamental to politics. Ideas are things which we come to know through rational, intellectual thought- we have to toy with ideas from the past and ideas for the future in order to come up with creative, effective political policies . Having a broad scope of knowledge makes coming up with new, creative ideas easier. If people are educated in the liberal arts, they will have this broad scope of knowledge which will help them come up with new and improved political ideas. The political pundits and politicians most involved in the anti-intellectualism movement often cite the founding fathers and the constitution in order to support their political rhetoric this has implicit contradictions. Furthermore, Glenn Beck is skewing what is fundamental to America- one of his hot topics, religion, is NOT fundamental to America- the separation of church and state is fundamental to America. The only thing we have as citizens to represent ourselves and our ideas is our vote; it should be the most informed, intellectual, reliable vote possible. It is critical that we feel confident in our own education and in our own intellectual capacities and not rely on someone else to tell us what is important. The demagoguery that people such as Glenn Beck participate in would be a non-issue if people were liberal arts educated. This is because the false fears that Glenn Beck incites in people would collapse if people had their own knowledge of current issues and the liberal arts backgrounds which would enable them to think for themselves. People fail to realize the absurdity behind his rhetoric because of their lack of education. Anti-intellectualism will eventually lead to the destruction of the American democratic state and the ideals to which democracy is committed. Liberal arts education can cure our problem by giving citizens a broad scope of knowledge which would allow us to make informed and thoughtful political decisions rather than relying on the ill-advised rhetoric spouted by anti-intellectuals. Liberal arts education would also afford us the knowledge of what basic tenets shape the American political infras tructure.

Summary of Rizal The Movie

The film started with a scene showing Rizal writing a letter. The letter contains his thoughts that the Philippines has a serious illness and that it is plagued by the Spanish domination over our country. Crisostomo Ibarra was also introduced in the film, and it is Rizal’s alter ego. Ibarra had been forced to have two personalities because of the worsening problem in our country. Rizal had published books such as the Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, as his weapons against the dominions of Spain in our country.These novels became an inspiration over the â€Å"KATIPUNAN† or the â€Å"Sons of the People. † The Katipunans tear their ‘cedulas’ that symbolizes to end all of their ties with Spain and unity with revolution. The friars have discovered such revolution; they even interrogated Paciano (Rizal’s older brother) just to gain information about the uprising in the country. The male members of Rizal’s family left their home at Tondo , Manila because they were being hunted by Spanish forces. On November 1896, Rizal has been brought to Fort Santiago in Manila, and he was being interrogated by a colonel of Spain.He refuse to admit that he knows anything about the revolution and the colonel accused him as a traitor, just like Fr. Burgos. Father Burgos has been sentenced to death together with other priests such as Father Gomez and Father Zamora (GOMBURZA). The death of Father Burgos was witnessed by Paciano. Paciano opened Rizal’s eyes to the injustices at that time. Rizal believed that education is important, but what matters most is how you have learned the things in your life. Rizal’s first teacher was his mother and she had inspired him to learn more.Soon, Rizal was sent to Ateneo Municipal in 1872 and University of Santo Thomas in 1878. Her mother taught him the story of the moth; and she told him not to be like the little moth who was fascinated with the fire and it had burned his wings and fall completely into death. Rizal not only wanted to learn everything, but he wanted to see everything. He became a physician, and he cured his mother’s eye illness. He became a novelist and wrote about the current status of the country. He became a good son and good brother in his family.In the film, Rizal’s mother was accused of attempting to poison her sister-in-law and she was imprisoned for almost two years. This is a revenge of the friars to Rizal’s family and to protect Jose Rizal, Paciano advised him not to use ‘Mercado’ anymore, and only ‘Rizal. ’ Rizal was exiled and Signor Luis Taviel de Andrade became his Defense Counsel (the brother of Jose Taviel, Rizal’s former bodyguard). Luis has unleashed the stories behind Rizal’s intent of writing the novels, his life, his relationships, his education, and his beliefs.Luis believed that as a writer, what Rizal did is not art, but propaganda. Rizal defended that what the Fil ipinos really wanted is recognition that Filipinos are equal with Spaniards and peaceful reforms through education and civic development. Rizal went to Europe to study medicine and do whatever is necessary to help liberate the people, as requested by Paciano. He left Leonor (his cousin and his lover) and his family to help his fellow countrymen. Rizal did well in school of medicine and he was inspired by the uprisings in Spain.He talked some of his fellow Filipinos in Spain in how shall they help in changing the system in the Philippines. Rizal’s novels stimulated uprisings in our country and some copies of it were burned by the friars. Innocent people were imprisoned by the government by illegally possessing the books of Rizal. ‘La Solidaridad’ was founded and writings about the system were once again published. Some misunderstanding happened between the members of the organization and Rizal went back to the Philippines to face the Spaniards.In Manila, Rizal fou nded the ‘La Liga Filipina’ in July 1892. It aims to fortify the foundations of man and his family, give importance to education and agriculture for the development of our country. Rizal was exiled at Dapitan and there he met Josephine Bracken. Monsignor Nosaleda is not contended with the exile of Rizal and he wanted him dead. He asked Governor General Blanco to execute Rizal, but refuse to do so. A new governor general, Governor General Polavieja was sent by Spain to grant Monsignor Nosaleda’s wish. The revolution sparked despite Rizal’s disapproval.For him, we are not yet ready and it is not the right time. Rizal however was charged with being the leader of the revolution and he was sentenced to death. Rizal was fired on December 30, 1896 at Bagumbayan, Manila. His family and the Filipino people mourned for his death. Filipinos joined the uprisings and with Rizal’s death, we have achieved independence on June 12, 1896. Rizal died with honor and di gnity for his country and for his fellow countrymen. He had fought for our freedom till his last breath. He had fought for his principles no matter how hard it is.

Demographics With an estimated population of 65. 8  million people (as of 1 Jan. 2011), France is the 20th most populous country in the world. In 2004, a total of 140,033 people immigrated to France. Of them, 90,250 were from Africa and 13,710 from Europe. In 2008, France granted citizenship to 137,000 persons, mostly to people from Morocco, Algeria and Turkey. It is illegal for the French state to collect data on ethnicity and race, a law with its origins in the 1789 revolution and reaffirmed in the constitution of 1958.. While official data on the size of the country's ethnic minorities is not available, it has been estimated that between three million and six million people are of North African ancestry while an estimated 2.   million people are of Black African ancestry. Introduction In this paper, I compare and contrast two women-based organizations, Nellie’s Women’s Shelter and North York Women’s Resource Centre and provide a critical analysis of their structure through community engagement concepts. The paper focuses on critiquing the mandate of the two organizations, how they are similar and differ in their mandate, as well as identifying the problem that lies within. Additionally, I also critique the organizations’ source of funding and how it can be detrimental to their existence. Organizations are often seen as a catalyst for social change but they can also be problematic, which can hinder the occurrence of a revolution that is aspired.
